Top prospects lists can be tough at the start of the year because sometimes the top prospect or maybe even two top prospects on a given team could make the opening day roster and not look back so they suddenly lose their status as a prospect.
The San Jose Sharks top prospect Tomas Hertl is close to making the San Jose's roster according to many observers.
Upper echelon prospects
1. Center Tomas Hertl - 2012 First Round Pick at 17th overall, he could be headed to the NHL on opening night but if not he will play for Worcester in the AHL. Hertl spent his first year in the Czech League and has a solid two way game and playmaking ability.
2. Defenseman Mirco Mueller - 2013 First Round Pick at 18 overall, Mueller is playing for his junior team Everett in the WHL. A fairly skilled offensive defenseman with good size though he needs to add strength, Mueller was one of the most athletic defenseman in the 2013 NHL draft.
Other prospects
3. Left Wing Matt Nieto - 2011 Second Round Pick Matt Nieto will play for Worcester in the AHL after leaving Boston College last season to play 11 games for Worcester. Nieto has a chance to be a 2nd line winger but could also be a 3rd line winger in the NHL ultimately.
4. Center Chris Tierney - Tierney is playing for London in the OHL.
5. Center Dan O'Regan - The 2012 5th round pick will play at Boston University as a sophomore in 2013-2014.
6. Defenseman Matt Tennyson- Tennyson will probably play for Worcester in the AHL although he could make the Sharks opening day roster as the last defenseman.
7. Defenseman Konrad Abeltshauser - The big defenseman plays for Worcester this year.
8. Center Freddie Hamilton - Hamilton will be on the Worcester roster in 2013-2014.
9. Left Wing Gabryel Paquin-Boudreau - GPB the Sharks 2013 Second Round Pick is playing on his junior hockey team Baie-Comeau in the QMJHL.
10. Defenseman Dylan Demelo - Demelo will play for Worcester in 2013-2014.

2013 NHL Draft Prospect Battle Mueller vs. Rychel vs. Mantha
The 2013 NHL Draft was considered one of the best drafts if not the best NHL draft since 2003. Did the San Jose Sharks make the right selection with Defenseman Mirco Mueller? Mueller an athletic defenseman who wasn't quite as highly ranked with some scouting services until the draft approached was the 8th defenseman selected in the 1st round and only one more defenseman would be selected in the 1st round at the 26th overall selection when Anaheim chose Shea Theodore.
Rychel and Mantha both goal scoring wingers were selected immediately after Mueller at 18.
More goes into how these players do than their statistics but you can follow the statistics of Lazar and Gauthier here for fun to start.
18th Overall Pick Defenseman Mirco Muller San Jose Sharks
19th Overall Pick Left Wing Kerby Rychel Columbus Blue Jackets
20th Overall Pick Right Wing/Left Wing Anthony Mantha Detroit Red Wings
